Meet The Horizon Aluminium: Louis Vuitton’s First-Ever Aluminium Suitcase 

Louis Vuitton has had many notable collaborations throughout its brand history. Among them is the “Icon and Iconoclasts” project from 2014, where six renowned creatives were invited to breathe new life into the brand’s classic Monogram canvas. Australian industrial designer Marc Newson dreamed up a whimsical, fleece-adorned backpack that could stand upright, thus marking the beginning of a precious partnership with the Maison.

Two years later Louis Vuitton unveiled the Horizon in collaboration with Newson, a rolling suitcase that transformed modern travel for 21st-century jetsetters as much as the trunk once did for the brand’s contemporaries. Elements such as the natural cowhide leather corners nodded to Louis Vuitton’s history, while everything else winked at the future. Featuring sleek, fluid lines reminiscent of the iconic Lockheed Lounge, and a revolutionary polypropylene composite as forward-thinking as the linen phenolic composite central to the Micarta furniture, the Horizon embodied aesthetic and material values at the heart of Newson’s most influential designs.

In the past ten years since its inception, the Horizon has established itself as one of Louis Vuitton’s most emblematic pieces. Available in either canvas or leather, the luggages have evolved alongside the Maison’s seasonal collections, debuting in various colours and motifs that reflect their latest vision. A number of Horizon luggages have also long offered complimentary custom hot stamping—a gesture of personalisation and prestige.  

Every relationship milestone is celebrated with a material that symbolises strength and value over time. Paper for the first year, wood for the fifth, and aluminium for the tenth. Fittingly, this year marks a decade of the Horizon and to celebrate, Louis Vuitton has introduced its very first aluminium suitcase, the new Horizon Aluminium. Durable and boundlessly transformable, aluminium perfectly encapsulates the connection between the House’s Art of Travel and Newson’s creative vision. It is not only a signature of the designer’s work, but also a core element of Louis Vuitton’s history, recalling the aluminium trunks produced at the end of the 19th century. Now, the Horizon Aluminium finds its place amid a new generation of travellers, including celebrities like Stray Kids’ Felix, BamBam, Charles Melton, and Nana Ouyang.

Characterised by a deceptively simple, streamlined silhouette, the Horizon Aluminium speaks to the same minimalist aesthetic that defines Newson’s original Horizon. But as with all great design, there’s complexity in its apparent ease. The mesmerising shell is crafted from a singular sheet of aluminium that undergoes a series of laser-cutting and stamping processes, the final of which produces an embossed Monogram motif that provides both visual appeal and structural reinforcement. Meanwhile, traditional rivets and external hinges are noticeably absent, contributing tremendously to the purity and seamlessness of the Horizon Aluminium’s overall look. In a true technical feat, they have instead been replaced by concealed hinges integrated into the interior and an ultra-thin frame system attached to the aluminium shell, making this the first rivet-free aluminium luggage on the market.

The Horizon Aluminium is designed for the greatest journey of all—life itself. Exceptionally resistant to impact and resilient in all conditions, it is built to endure a lifetime, perhaps several. Its shell may bear dents and scratches, but each is a mere testament to one’s greatest adventures. Capacious, optimised interiors allow room for efficient packing of all wants and needs. Unlike other suitcases on the market, the Horizon Aluminium’s trolley system is located on the outside of the case. Combined with a thermoformed interior lining, this innovation allows for a completely flat main compartment that maximises capacity. No more awkward ridges and jarring angles. Additional features include a zippered upper compartment to secure loose items, an extra-wide telescopic handle for unparalleled grip, a leather-covered side handle for easy handling, and enlarged shock-absorbent wheels that enable smooth, noise-free rolling. There’s also an accompanying leather luggage tag that doubles as a hook to anchor any additional bag to the top of the suitcase, including the matching Vanity Case that has been crafted with the same technical finesse of the suitcase.
