Jonathan Anderson Showed Us How to Embody a Modern-Day Aristocrat
For Dior’s SS27 collection, Jonathan Anderson threw the chicest house party. “Dior after hours” was how he described his third collection for the French maison.
Picture this: a gilded, glamorous 18th-century Parisian salon, its boiseries draped with tapestries, but it’s 3am and nobody has gone home. Jonathan Anderson tapped the Musée Nissim de Camondo as the backdrop for his after-hours fairytale at Dior.
As Anderson described it, the collection was about “something quite formal becoming undone”. That idea reverberated through every piece on the runway, swinging between glittery skinny trousers, frayed-edge knitwear, light, flowy suits and Napoleonic-style jackets.
The show opened with a lightweight, sheer chiffon pinstripe suit, almost as if he had just woken up in his mansion and gone straight to a party. What followed was a parade of aristocratic elegance that had been unapologetically out all night.
Worn denim appeared with rips held together by chains. Knitwear came distressed and slouchy, with trailing fringes and glittering threads. Glitter did not stop at the trousers. A glass-bead-embellished coat shimmered under the Parisian heat, creating a polka-dot-like illusion with every step.
The accessories refused to be outshone. Disco-ball boots leaned fully into the spectacle, while bags crafted from vintage textiles offered a more tactile contrast. Oversized totes, finished in Dior’s unmistakable cannage motif, grounded the collection.
The party got even hotter with Dior boys — BTS’s Jimin, Drew Starkey, Daniel Craig and Vinnie Hacker, to name a few — seated in the front row, alongside CORTIS’s Juhoon, Seonghyeon and Keonho, who attended their first-ever Dior show.
With his sophomore collection, Jonathan Anderson continues the fantasy he first introduced at Dior, taking us from the opening chapter of his debut to an after-hours aristocratic party. If his first show set the scene, this one kept the party going.
